SE 7016 - Instructional and Assistive Technology in Special Education Credits: 3
Description This graduate course will provide an in depth review and critical analysis of technologies used to assist students with disabilities in and outside the classroom. Candidates will explore theoretical foundations of technology use and implementation, examine critical perspectives on instructional technology, and learn to apply their understanding of various technologies to meet a wide range of student needs and challenges. Emphasis will be placed on the use of instructional technology (IT) and assistive technology (AT) to facilitate the successful integration of individuals with disabilities in general education settings. Candidates will examine critical issues for AT implementation in special education settings, and will identify effective evidence-based strategies for addressing common barriers. Candidates will engage in the consideration, selection, implementation, and evaluation of classroom technology (both instructional and assistive) to circumvent physical, sensory, communicative, learning, and social challenges. Candidates will also learn to apply the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework to facilitate the adapting of technology, instruction, and assessment to meet a range of student needs.
