SE 7012 - Research-based Interventions in Reading, Writing, and Literacy for Exceptional Learners Credits: 3
Description Students with disabilities are to be placed in the least restrictive environment and are often responsible for meeting the standards of the regular education curriculum. Literacy is often a challenge for students with and without disabilities and may become a major learning barrier in content-area classrooms. In this course, candidates will review evidence based strategy instruction to better understand instructional methods and theories to help students who struggle with literacy to read for understanding and to write to communicate ideas. The instructor will focus on writing instruction in the first part of the course and reading instruction in the second part of the course. Through readings, in-depth class discussion, class activities, and research projects, candidates will become skilled at facilitating literacy instruction for students with and without disabilities who struggle with writing and reading.
