Description Research and practice in a context of the development of science as a forum for in-service teachers to synthesize their learning of various scientific disciplines. The context is provided by a philosophical and historical approach to the emergence of science as a distinctive way to look at nature. Candidates are engaged in discussions of issues pertaining to the teaching of various scientific ideas and their impact on larger societal issues. The course addresses National Science Education Standards that call for an understanding of the history and development of science, as well as its interdisciplinary nature. The course is structured to enhance the development of scientific literacy, critical thinking, and problem solving with an emphasis on the teacher-as-practitioner. There is a strong focus on individual research interests through an annotated bibliography.
