ML 6530 - Cervantes and the Golden Age Credits: 3
Description This course introduces teacher candidates to Cervantes and the Spanish Golden Age’s major writers, emphasizing their contributions to the development of modern European literature and thought. Close readings and analysis of Don Quixote and the Exemplary Novels will constitute the core of the course. Students will also be guided through critical readings of narrative (the picaresque novel), lyric (Italianate and Baroque poetry from Garcilaso to Sor Juana Inés) and dramatic texts (major plays by Lope de Vega, Tirso de Molina, Alarcón and Calderón). Issues of subjectivity, linguistic perspectivism, humor and irony, gender, and national identity will be discussed. Attention will also be paid to literary and cultural history, as well as questions of critical method. (Conducted in Spanish)
