Description In contemporary media discourse, Latinx people are overwhelmingly portrayed as immigrants and newcomers to the United States. This depiction obscures the fact that nearly two-thirds of the Latinx population is U.S. born, and that the history of Latinxs on what is today U.S. soil goes back centuries. Even those who are immigrants have generally arrived from countries distorted by the long history of U.S. intervention in the Americas; thus, while these immigrants may be new to the United States, they are no strangers to American empire. The reality is that Latinx history is at the center of many key developments in United States history, even though Latinxs have been marginalized in most accounts. This course will explore the history of Latinx peoples in the United States and transnationally, with attention to Latinx diversity in terms of national origin, immigration status, race, class, gender, and sexual orientation, and with a focus on Latinx activism. Focusing on Latinx experiences gives us new and deeper perspectives into the history of the United States and the Americas.
