AS 5712 - Mass Media and Popular CultureCredits: 4 This senior seminar focuses on the relation between mass media and different forms of popular culture and explores different theoretical approaches to the understanding of media in modern society. The course examines how popular media communicate ideas about the world, about identity, and our sense of self. Reading across television, film, music, art, and the popular press, the course considers relationships between the mass media, institutions, identity, relations of power, and historical, economic, social, and political contexts.
Prerequisites (Two of the following courses): AS 2112 , AS 2122 , AS 2252 , AS 2262 , AS 2263 , AS 2300 , AS 2640 , AS 3222 , AS 3270 , AS 3462 or permission of instructor; EMS
